Did you hear about this week’s most recent Boil Water Advisory in our area? If this is news to you, Trenton Water Works released a notice late last week advising its residents to boil all water in their homes as the chlorination levels were too low to disinfect the water for thousands of homeowners. Sadly, this isn’t the first time that municipalities in our area have had issues with their filtration process. Late last year, Pennsylvania American Water, released a similar notice to residents of Yardley, PA due to high turbidity issues.

Municipalities like Trenton Water Works do a great job of providing quality water to thousands of people, but once the water leave their facility, there is no guarantee that the water that enters your home is to the quality that you expect for your family. What was the problem with the water coming from Trenton Water Works?

Their chlorination process was not substantial enough to properly disinfect the water, opening up the possibility of microorganisms appearing in the water.

Sadly, this issue is not entirely isolated, Trenton Water Works generated 13 violations last year and 11 violations in 2017, the worst performing years on record for the public water system. Even as they clear the issues related to this specific advisory, it would still be wise to have a private filtration system to ensure that you never have anything to worry about with the water for your family.

Is My Drinking Water Okay?

There are two problems going on in your house. Naturally, you think that the water that is going into your body should take precedence. While many of us expect our drinking water to be consistently free from impurities and imperfections, the reality can be much different. At any given time, there are several factors that can affect the quality of your drinking water, ranging from your water supply’s source, whether it be a public system or a private well, to the quality of the plumbing that your drinking water travels through to reach your tap. Municipalities regulate and treat their water supply for contaminants and impurities, but recent news stories about the failures of some public works can make trusting the quality of our drinking water that much more difficult. What steps can we take to make sure that we’re consuming the highest quality, safest drinking water we can?

Maybe you get most of your drinking water from the dispenser in your fridge or use a water filter pitcher before consuming water from your tap. In both cases, an activated carbon filter is used to attract and remove certain contaminants, including the ones that affect the look and taste of your drinking water. This leaves behind a seemingly clear and perfect glass of water, but it may not be completely absent of contaminants. While these filters often work well with removing the taste and odor from some water, most are not able to capture and remove certain harmful contaminants, such as PFAS. The relatively short amount of time that the water spends passing through these smaller carbon filters may also not fully eliminate all odor and taste issues, especially on more difficult water.

Replacing or supplementing your home’s drinking water with bottled water is a solution, but the cost, inconvenience, and heavy environmental impact of discarded plastic bottles makes this a less than ideal fix. In addition, bottled water regulations are about on par with the EPA’s standards on tap water, meaning that your Poland Springs or Deer Park bottles might be using water very similar to what you can find in your home’s tap. Those images of crystal clear, glacier-fed artesian water sources on water bottle labels are far from the truth. Many bottled water brands have even been subject to recalls due to safety concerns of E.Coli or high arsenic contamination.

How Would Hard Water Affect My Home?

Unsure of a certain solution, your mind moves to the next problem: that obvious build up on your faucets. Chances are you have hard water which means it has a lot of minerals like calcium and magnesium in it. Water collects these minerals from the ground while traveling to your home. Excess amounts of these minerals are harmful to household items such as plumbing, appliances, and other surfaces that come in contact with hard water.  Some of the specific areas to watch for if you think you might have hard water are your plumbing, water heaters, kitchen appliances and dishes.

As hard water flows through your plumbing system, it reacts with the linings of your pipes. This leaves behind mineral deposits and scaling that will eventually clog the plumbing system. Faucets, valves, and shower heads often become clogged with deposits as well. It will also stick to the soaps! The calcium in the water will mix with soaps to form a thick, sticky curd-like substance we know as soap scum. It sticks to your showers, sinks, and even your hair and skin when you bathe. This dries our bodies leaving your hair frizzy and your skin itchy.

When you have hard water, mineral deposits from inside the tank and on the heating elements of water heaters. These mineral deposits and the scaling form an insulating barrier between the heating element and water, which significantly reduces the efficiency of the water heater and increases the cost of heating your water. The prolonged buildup will even do damage that requires replacing the unit.

Dishwashers, coffee makers, and washing machines are prone to the mineral buildup that can really drag them down. As the minerals build-up, the efficiency of the heating element reduces and the time needed to heat the water increases. If the heating cycle is on a timer, it may never reach the appropriate temperature. This layer of scale can cause the heating element to burn out, reducing the lifespan of the appliance.

Glassware, silverware, and your other dishes also suffer from hardness. Not only does water with high mineral content leave a residue, but it is also like sandblasting your dishes over time. Surfaces appear cloudy and rough instead of the smooth and shiny pieces you fell in love within the store.

Well, let’s talk about wells. I mean, it’s pretty relevant since about 12% of New Jersey Residents are using water from private wells, with the largest portion of that percentage falling in Mercer County. Where does well water come from? That’s easy (and honestly pretty boring). Simply, it’s old, stale rainfall. When it rains, the plants absorb most of the water, but what is left seeps between pores in rock until it reaches dense bedrock and can’t travel any further. Wells are drilled to collect that water that’s sitting there in pockets and caverns. Real interesting stuff right? Let’s get to good stuff.

Why Well Water Needs Treatment

“So why do I need to worry about my well water?” I know that’s probably what you’re thinking since you’re still reading this. Well, it is very likely that your well is pulling up contaminated ground water. Much of New Jersey and Bucks County seem to be hit by “a perfect storm” of terrifying water contaminants. These locations brag about having the best of both worlds: the proximity to Philadelphia, Trenton, Jersey City, and New York City with the beautiful landscapes of the rural Northeast. What they don’t brag about: landfills, failed septic tanks, underground fuel tanks, fertilizers and pesticides, and runoff from urban areas. A good rule of thumb? If your local public water supply is concerned about anything, you should be too.

The current largest concern seems to be perfluorooctaanesulfonic acid (or PFOS for short). PFOS is a known carcinogenic and may have toxic effects on the immune, liver, and endocrine systems. Since the 1950s, these chemicals were used commercially water, oil and stain repellants in carpets, clothing, paints, polishes, non-stick pans, waxes, and much more. Now, however, PFOS have ended up in water supplies and pose a threat, especially to those in central to south New Jersey.

Our area prides itself in being home to many local farms, and the rural landscapes are interspersed in the suburban life. Though beautiful, runoff from these rural areas can be hazardous to your well water. Infectious microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, and protozoa, as well as high levels of nitrate come from animal waste and chemical fertilizers. Like the rain water, these seep through the ground and into the water you bring into your home. In addition, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) come from household septic tanks and contaminate drinking water.

Finally, high levels of lead have been detected by many public systems in New Jersey, including Trenton Water Works, Bordentown Water Department, and Morristown. High levels of lead are known to affect children’s behavioral and intelligence development, as well as cause many health issues for adults. If it affects the public system that covers your area, it most likely also affects your private well system.

Water Treatment Options for Well Water

Trenton is beginning to take measures to remove PFOS in the public supply, and other public health departments are taking responsibility for safe water, but because wells are privately owned, residents must take cautionary measures for their own water. The CDC recommends a couple of things to help make your water safe. Filtration systems act as a physical barrier and can remove the impurities from the water. Filtration is a broad term. Carbon filtration can remove PFOS and VOCs while improving taste and odor problems. Reverse Osmosis systems can remove virtually everything, including lead Water softeners remove hardness in the water by removing calcium and manganese. Disinfection, such as chlorine and UV light kills microorganisms.

Depending on the problems that you are trying to solve, costs can vary widely, but may not be as crazy as you anticipate. Simple filtration, such as a simple drinking water system, can be as low as just a few hundred dollars. For whole house water treatment, you’re looking at a few thousand dollars, which seems like a small price to pay for healthy, safe water.
